An Analysis of Relationship between the Microfracture Features and Mineral Morphology of Granite

Using the techniques of X-ray diffraction, polarizing microscopy, uniaxial compression, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), relationships between microfracture features mineral morphology granite were studied. The results showed that feldspar, quartz, biotite are main components samples in this study. Biotite has a self-shaped flake structure with perfect cleavage. K-feldspar lattice double crystal two groups Plagioclase semi-self-shaped plate Quartz is prismatic or granular exhibits noncleavage. flaky exfoliation, cleavage fracture mainly determined by its peculiar Feldspar (K-feldspar plagioclase) plate, layered, also quartz highly irregular, many randomly distributed intergranular transgranular cracks, small particles granule bulges, similar to crystal, due noncleavage feature itself. It demonstrated microfractures preferentially ruptured along planes for these minerals under action external forces.
